Familiar soccer foes face each other again

By John Barry/The Janesville Gazette

Nothing was settled the first time the Milton High and Delavan-Darien girls soccer teams played this season. The Southern Lakes Conference co-champions played to a scoreless tie. There will be a lot more at stake Thursday night when the two teams meet for the second time. A berth in the Division 1 Elkhorn Sectional final will be on the line.

In Saturday's regional final games, Milton edged Janesville Craig, 3-2, while the Comets shut out Lake Geneva Badger, 1-0.

Milton (15-2-2) and Delavan-Darien (18-3-1) will play Thursday at Milton at 7 p.m.The Red Hawks built a 3-1 lead over the Cougars but had to hang on for the win.

"We had our moments, and Craig had their moments. It was a good match," Milton coach Bobby Nichols said.

"Craig really stepped up its game since the last time I saw them play. Fortunately, we took advantage of a couple opportunities. And getting ahead was important, too."

Both Sanchez and Kildow played well in goal. Sanchez finished with 10 saves, including two sprawling saves in the second half that kept her team in the game.

Kildow also had 10 saves, but could only watch late in the game as Craig's best opportunity to tie the game and force overtime came up short. With 2:20 left to play in the game, Mari Hosseini directed a corner kick in front of the Milton net. In a scramble for the ball, a Craig player headed the ball but it hit the top of the crossbar and trickled over the net.

Milton's get's a chance to play the Comets again following Delavan-Darien's 1-0 victory over Badger

Despite dominating play throughout, the Comets needed Hannah Zugay's firsthalf goal to pick up the Division 1 regional win.

Delavan-Darien allowed only two shots on goal.

"Just tell us who we play and what time," Delavan-Darien coach Bruce Mowery said, "and we'll be ready. It didn't matter to us who we played (Milton or Craig).

"We just have to come out and play the way we're capable of. That's all we can control."
