East Troy, Whitewater tune up for state

East Troy and Whitewater High girls may be in a position to give the old Southern Lakes a last hurrah in next weekend's WIAA state track and field meet.

The Trojans and Whippets figure to pack quite punch for Division 2, particularly in the field events and relays, after putting up a 1-2 finish Thursday night in the Kewaskum Sectional.

In the Division 1 Burlington Secitonal, Badger advanced five individuals and one relay team.

While capturing the sectional title with 67 points, East Troy qualified for state in six individual events and one relay. Whitewater, with 57 points, advanced in three individual events and all four relays.

Lakeside Lutheran's girls, team state champions two of the last three years, were not be overlooked, either. They finished two points behind Whitewater in the sectional, while qualifying in five individual events and two relays.

East Troy senior Becca Buchholtz, the defending Division 2 state champion in the high jump and triple jump punched another ticket to La Crosse by winning all three jumping events for the second time this week.

Southern Lakes rivals finished 1-2 in two of those events. Buchholtz nipped Whitewater senior Chelsea Heil in the long jump and gained the edge over Whippet senior Leah Harms in the triple jump.

Meanwhile, Whitewater's girls put on a state-bound performance in all the relays-highlighted by a victorious run for Heil, Megan Theune, Kelsey Harms and Leah Harms in the 1,600 finale.

Whitewater's boys went into the Kewaskum Sectional with qualifiers in 17 individual events and four relays. But with Milwaukee Lutheran and Brown Deer setting the pace, the Whippets has only two individuals and their sectional champion 1,600 relay team as automatic state qualifiers.

However, senior Grant Bughman is among those qualifiers. After placing second and third in the state in the hurdles last year, the Whippet speedster opted for the sprints this time and will head to state as a 400-meter sectional champion. He'll also being anchoring the 1,600 relay team, while Alex Adkinson represents Whitewater in the 800-meter run.

Jefferson senior Tyler Mueller will head back to state as the Kewaskum Sectional champion in the triple jump. He went 45 feet, 1 inch, putting him close to the 45-32 that placed him second in the D2 state meet last year.

Three Rock Valley Conference athletes come out of the Boscobel Sectional for return trips to the Division 2 state meet. Clinton senior Cody Campbell advanced with a 54w championship performance in the shot put, while Walworth Big Foot junior Travis Frederick qualified as the discus runner-up at 161-9, and Brodhead-Juda senior Caleb Frost with a fourthplace finish of 15.5 in the 110 high hurdles.

State compeition begins next Friday on the UW-La Crosse campus.
