Scientists report results from Elkhorn study
Elkhorn--U.S. agricultural scientists say they've discovered organically grown wheat or alfalfa can be as productive as conventional crops.
The scientists based their study on results from the Wisconsin Integrated Cropping Systems Trials conducted from 1990-to-1997 at the Walworth County Agriculture Complex in Elkhorn.
The study moved to Arlington, Wis. in 2002 after the county farm closed.
The scientists found organic forage crops yielded as much or more dry matter as their conventional counterparts with quality sufficient to produce as much milk as the conventional systems.
The research is reported in the April issue of the Agronomy Journal.
