Pony parade: Artists selected for summer art project in Lake Geneva
Area artists have begun work on their creations for the "Horsing Around Town" project that will feature 80 pony sculptures situated throughout downtown Lake Geneva. More than 200 artists applied to participate in the project.
At Williams Bay Middle Middle School, eighth grader Leah Newell enlisted her friends, Alyssa Alheid and Caroline Brown, to help.
At Williams Bay High School, sophomore Sean Quinn got down to work Wednesday.
Artists have until the end of May to complete their work. The public display is set for June.
The project is being promoted by S.M.I.L.E.S. therapeutic riding center in Darien to promote and support their programs.
"We are pleased to have the opportunity to show off the work of local and national artists and thrilled that the horse is being displayed for everyone to enjoy," said Sherry Monty, executive director of S.M.I.L.E.S.
"The horse has been such a critical part of our program and we are proud to honor this amazing animal."
A kick-off party, where all 50 sculptures will be on display will be held at the Grand Geneva Resort on May 31.
In the fall the horses will be auctioned, and proceeds from the event will support equine-assisted activities and therapy for children and adults with disabilities at S.M.I.L.E.S.
