Christmas shopping is down to the wire, and if you're like a lot of frantic shoppers, you're still scurrying around to find that perfect last-minute gift for a family member or friend.

Never fear, because Dunham's Sports in the Delavan Plaza, 421 S. Wright St., Delavan, 728-1992, www.dunhamssports.com, is here.

The store, which opened in May, is one of 151 such stores operated by the Midwest's largest full-line sporting goods chain. Located in the Delavan Plaza, it's the perfect place to shop for a last-minute gift for that person you still have on your list.

The Dunham's chain has built its reputation on selection, quality and value, and offers an unsurpassed choice of national brands at low prices every day. You'll find a complete line of sporting goods, athletic equipment, active sports gear and leisure apparel here.

The chain was founded in 1937 in Waterford, Mich., just outside of Detroit, with the first store opening under the name Dunham's Bait & Tackle. Its corporate offices are still located in Waterford, but it's no longer just a bait and tackle shop. Its stores are located in 12 Midwest states and include 17 in Wisconsin.

"We opened the store (in Delavan) because the Delavan market fit into what Dunham's is looking for when opening new stores," said Tom Lemere, director of advertising for the chain in a news release.

"The store has been doing very good for us since it opened, and we are excited to be able to serve the sporting good needs of the community."

What kind of special Christmas gifts can you find here? Lemere said there are a number of items that are extremely popular this year.

"Fleece, both branded--Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Under Armour--and Team Fleece have been selling well. Compression apparel like Nike Pro and Under Armour continue to do well also."

Other sports apparel items that are selling well this Christmas season include ski apparel, with jackets in new colors that have proven popular, as well as gloves, hats and ski bibs. December snows have made skiing possible once again in our area, and these are popular items with anyone who enjoys the sport.

"Footwear also continues to do well, like the Mammoth Crocs and the Jibbitz that go with them," Lemere said. "Basketball shoes in multiple colors, and with winter setting in, ice skates and boots have sold well, too."

But sports apparel isn't all that Dunham's features by any means. You'll find a wide variety of sporting gear here as well that will appeal to just about any sports fan.

"Golf continues to do well with great names like Nike, Callaway and Taylormade," said Lemere. "We have a great selection of drivers, hybrids and fairway woods at great prices. Golf balls continue to be a good seller for those last minute hard-to-buy-for golfers."

And for paintball enthusiasts, Dunham's carries a wide variety of accessories for this increasingly popular sport, all of which make great gifts, Lemere said.

Table games are also proving to be a popular gift, along with dartboards, air hockey tables and billiard tables.

Something not always considered a "sporting gear" item, but which is always greatly appreciated by any outdoor enthusiast, is optics. Dunham's carries a nice selection of binoculars that will make a perfect gift for any individual who enjoys the out-of-doors, whether he or she be a birder, a hunter, or just a hiker who enjoys seeing nature up close.

Lemere said that's why Dunham's is one of the best places to shop, not only at Christmas but year-round.

"Sports items and clothing make such good Christmas gifts because just about everyone you know does something related to sports," he said. "There are people that are into golf, like to hunt or fish, enjoy kayaking or canoeing, camping, playing paintball, baseball or softball. Maybe it's just cheering on your team by wearing a Packers, Bucks or Brewers jersey."

And even those who aren't into sports will find something at Dunham's.

"Everyone wears shoes and we carry the latest ones in areas like running, cross-training, basketball and walking, just to name a few," said Lemere. "There are not too many people who don't wear some kind of fleece, including the popular hoodies. Everyone needs to stay warm in the winter, and Dunham's carries a great selection of jackets, gloves, hats and ski bibs. Everyone wants to wear the hot new colors, and by giving a new jacket for Christmas, you can do just that. We have great stocking stuffers like a golf glove, socks, ski gloves, hats, T-shirts and many more things throughout the store."

As with all Christmas shopping, it's better to shop early when stores have lots of items. But Lemere said Dunham's does its best to stay in stock of any item through Christmas, so get there early tomorrow! The store is open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Christmas Eve. Normal store hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
