$60,000 to help our local poverty-stricken

(Published Nov. 22, 2006, 5:00 p.m.)

Richard Driehaus gave The Time Is Now to Help a $30,000 matching grant check. For the past two years, Richard has done a $20,000 matching grant, but this year Richard graciously increased that grant to $30,000, acknowledging the need to help.

A personal thank you to Richard Dreihaus and the Richard Driehaus Charitable Lead Annuity Trust and all those who made this matching grant possible.

Donations ranging from $1 to $5,000 - and every amount in between - were made this year. Every penny counted toward making this matching grant happen for the benefit of our local poverty stricken.

As always, a description of where every penny was spent is being provided below. I thank one and all for helping with caring and sharing. This makes our communities much stronger, a better place to live and makes us proud to be Americans in our great United States.

Below is a breakdown, showing where every penny of the $60,000 was spent and showing how, of every penny donated to The Time Is Now to Help, 100 percent, was given to help our local poverty-stricken.

This is how we helped:

Rent

Thanks to our efforts, as neighbors of communities that care, we kept many in their own shelters. We faced many people with evictions. We were able to create budgets that allowed for rents in new places, we worked with existing landlords and we were able to work with landlords to agree to rent allowances.

Utilities

Together we were able to have heat, gas and electric utilities turned on for many.

Food

I found many empty cupboards and refrigerators. In our great United States, 40 million Americans go to bed hungry every day. Those we found hungry in our communities we helped to feed, easing their pain and suffering. With the help of our local wonderful food pantry volunteers and our new upcoming Food Drop Center, we will continue to help.

Toiletries

Thanks to our joint efforts, many individuals have received toilet paper, bath soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other everyday necessities. Thank you for caring and sharing.

Bedding

I found individuals sleeping on old mattresses, old couches and on old blankets on the floor. When I returned with new mattresses, box springs and frames, which we buy wholesale from America's Mattress and Verlo Mattress in Lake Geneva, children and adults were very thankful.

Transportation

We are blessed to have the wonderful "Ministry of Mechanics" in our local community. With the care they take in repairing cars, their gracious hearts and their talented hands to do the labor, we have been able to send many single mothers back on the road. They are now able to get to and from work, as well as take their children to and from school. Thank you.

What your donation does not do

As a reminder, your donation does not pay for any overhead, any office supplies, any of our phone bill, none of our automobile expenses, etc. Your donation does not pay for salaries, or reimbursements. Not one penny of your donation goes to any of us at The Time Is Now to Help.

Every penny you donate, 100 percent, goes to the poverty-stricken for daily necessities of life, food, clothing, utilities, shelter, bedding, toiletries, household necessities, etc. The Time Is Now to Help is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) charity.

Together we were able to make a remarkable difference in all the lives we touched. We were able to change sorrow, pain, shame, suffering and fear to hope, smiles, happy tears and comfort, knowing we are caring and sharing.

Many hours, every day, are spent fighting poverty, investigating to make sure every penny we give, together, goes to good people in genuine need, not lazy people.

I get emotionally drained facing all the conflicts and emotions of the despair and pain of poverty. I thank all of you for your strength, which you have been giving me in your letters, your kind words and support to The Time Is Now to Help. Together we make a big difference helping our fellow creations of God. I thank all of you for your kindness in caring and sharing what you have been blessed with.
