Walworth County's consolidation of its facilities management and highway departments into the public works department earned the Foth & Van Dyke Good Government Award.

The award is presented to Wisconsin counties, towns or municipalities that introduced cost-savings initiatives without reducing or eliminating services.

The consolidation of the facilities and highway departments in 2004 involved eliminating, reclassifying or reassigning 17 positions, which resulted in greater efficiency and annual cost savings.

The panel of judges complimented the county's ability to seamlessly merge the departments and take on additional work without hiring additional staff.

Shane Crawford, deputy county administrator-public works/intergovernmental relations, heads the public works department
