For clarity sake, to be a member of the VFW, someone has to have served overseas and received at least one campaign medal; to be a member of the American Legion, someone has to have served during a war.
Both organizations serve civically together and separately.
Often the Elkhorn VFW Post finds out about veterans in need through Chris Jordan, Walworth County Veterans Services officer; other times it's through the grapevine.
"The government can only do so much, so it's great how much these other groups do."
"We're here when they need us," Kampstad said. "We're here to help veterans from the beginning all the way through to being involved in veterans' legislation."
Typical of the modest personalities of his post brothers, Cook admits to being too proud to have gotten on the phone to ask for help in those first days home.
"It's one of those things," he says dismissively. "I've always been self-reliant. I've been a nurse for 17 years and I didn't want to be too burdensome."
Sometimes guys don't think they need help even when their fellow veterans offer it, but they know how to deal with each other, Kampstad and Davidson agreed.
"We're guys who grew up in the '50s and '60s and know a little bit about helping a guy," Kampstad said. "It makes you feel good and you know the person appreciates it."
The VFW is involved in many events and programs, from grade schools through senior citizens, and can always use support for their efforts in all kinds of ways. For more information, call the Elkhorn Post at 723-4979, or visit www.vfwwebcom.org.
