Delavan's Phoenix Middle School Peer Drama team led a presentation for Turtle Creek Middle School fifth graders as part of Red Ribbon Week.
The students and staff at Turtle Creek Elementary School as well as the entire Delavan-Darien School District celebrated Red Ribbon Week Oct. 16-20.
The Peer Drama team writes, produces and directs their own skits under the supervision of Phoenix School Counselor, Troy Stelzer.
The musical improvisations and rehearsed skits addressed issues of smoking, peer pressure, bullying, harassment and making positive choices. This group of middle school students provided an excellent opportunity for the fifth graders to observe their peers doing something both positive and meaningful.
Students spent the week participating in activities including understanding the dangers of drugs and alcohol, making good decisions and leading healthy lifestyles.
Red Ribbon Week, celebrated nationally since 1988, commemorates the life of Enrique Camerena, a drug enforcement officer who gave his life to the fight against drugs in the United States.
The kickoff to Red Ribbon Week this year was a three-screen multi-media presentation by Camfel titled, "Be the Change."
The presentation covered the themes of being responsible, good citizenship and making good choices when decisions are challenging. All three elementary schools viewed this presentation.
The school participated in daily spirit events, including a wear red day, team up for healthy choices day, as well as sock-it-to-poor-choices day.
Students and staff pledged a healthy choice that they would make on red ribbons that were displayed on the front entrance and windows of the school.
In addition, grades one to five participated in a poster-decorating contest with the theme of responsibility for making our healthy choices.
The creative and colorful posters were displayed all over the walls of Turtle Creek.
Prizes were awarded to all those who participated and additional prizes were given to students who put the most creativity and effort into making these outstanding posters.
Turtle Creek showed great effort and participation in all the Red Ribbon Week activities this year and would like to thank the Delavan United Way for providing the financial support needed for the Delavan-Darien School District to carry out these activities.
