Immigrant pleads innocent in ID theft case

(Published Aug. 22, 2007, 2:30 p.m.)

A former Star Packaging employee pleaded not guilty Monday to using the Social Security number of an 11-year-old girl to gain employment.

Miguel A. Gomez, 25, of 830 E. North St., Whitewater, was one of 25 Mexican immigrants arrested during an Aug. 8, 2006 raid at the company on Milwaukee Street.

He is one of three charged with identity theft.

The Social Security number he used belonged to a girl living in North Carolina, according to the criminal complaint.

A former co-worker, Rafael Cortes Reyes, was sentenced earlier this month to six months in the Walworth County Huber Dorm for using the Social Security number of a 68-year-old retired Wisconsin school teacher.

If convicted, Gomez could be sentenced to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
