D ear WC,

I have been walking back and forth to work for several months. A neighbor of mine stopped by my apartment and gave my daughter a copy of your Time is Now column in the newspaper. As I read your column, I noted that she had circled the "desperately needed cars" section.

I am someone who could really use your help in obtaining a car. I'm a single mother and you are welcome to come by and see our situation. I have enclosed where I work and my employer's name and telephone number.

It is hard enough being a single mom and working almost 50 hours a week, but to then have to walk almost three miles each way to and from work is quite tiring. If there is any way you can help me with this I would be most appreciative.

God bless you and all those who help the Time Is Now.

A tired mom in need

D ear Readers,

I contacted the mom and researched the situation they were in. I saw that in spite of the fact they had a good budget in place, this mother's income barely paid for their food, rent and utilities. It just did not allow for repairs on their car, which had over 238,000 miles on the odometer. She initially asked if there was a way she could get the car repaired. As I looked at it I asked her how many times the car had broken down. She responded that it happened only about once a month.

"Only?" I said.

"Well, you sort of get used to it," she replied. "With all the walking I've been doing I was grateful it only happened once a month."

Can you imagine what any of us would do if we had a car that broke down once a month? This happened frequently enough until it reached the point she could not afford the expensive repairs, which has left her walking to and from work.

Her boss is very sympathetic and does not complain when she arrives at work a few minutes late due to the car not working, requiring her to walk to work. There were times when she had saved up a little extra money for gas in order to do something special with her child, such as going to the Milwaukee Zoo, and the car would break down between here and Milwaukee. How heartbreaking and dangerous for anyone to be broke down on the side of the road, much less a woman and child.

"We have a wonderful van that was donated by a gracious senior citizen and it has been very well kept," I told her.

She began to cry and thanked God for our coming to their rescue. The goodness we network together to help one another is shared by all of us. This is a precious gift.

Her employer said she was an excellent employee and her neighbor, who had given her the copy of the column, stopped by and told us what a wonderful mother she was. I could see this as I observed how the mother and daughter interacted with such love for one another. It was very comforting and touching to see such love and devotion, especially in the face of hard times.

This lady wrote a letter of appreciation saying she never had such a wonderful vehicle to drive. She asked that we please thank the senior citizen for her and for her daughter. Her daughter also sent us a thank you letter saying, "It is nice to see my mother smiling and happy!"

We found a woman and her child who were struggling to meet their day-to-day needs. We intervened and brought them hope, love and care which is what all God's children need and deserve.

I thank everyone for reading. I thank all of you for caring and sharing in our networking to make our communities a better place to live.

Health and happiness,

God bless everyone,

WC
