Over 40 amateur singers will give it their all this Wednesday trying for one of the 24 spots in the Country Idol Contest 2007 at the Walworth County Fairgrounds.
The grand prize has doubled this year to $1,000 and the winner will open for Leann Rimes Saturday, Sept. 1, on the Grandstand Stage.
Many singers are repeat contenders from years past, said a fair office employee. The great majority are Walworth County residents. Anyone is eligible to compete as long as they meet the musical criteria.
The names of the 24 performers chosen after Wednesday's auditions will be posted on the fair's Web site June 21.
The group will decrease to 12 after the semifinal competition on Aug. 3 at the Festival of Summer in the courthouse park downtown Elkhorn at 6 p.m. and will compete in the finals on Aug. 29.
Finally, the six finalists will compete Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Park Stage during the fair.
The other significant change this year is that a panel of three judges will decide the winners from audition through final competition. In the past audience members chose the final Country Idol.
General rules of the competition include staying in the country music or crossover genre; being a solo act; and remaining within the five-minute time limit.
The public is welcome to attend any of the competitions. More information is available at www.walworthcountyfair.com or by calling 723-3228.
