Photography has always been an important part of how we present the news of Walworth County each week.
We reach out to a variety of sources to bring readers face to face with the people and events that define this place where live.
Still, much of our visual reporting is done by staff photographer Terry Mayer, a Darien native and lifelong Walworth County resident.
Two weeks ago, Mayer was honored with three awards for his photography in the Wisconsin News Photographers Association's Pictures of the Year contest.
The competition was held in conjunction with the WNPA's annual convention, held two weeks ago at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
The competition is open to both daily and weekly newspapers throughout the state.
Mayer won a first-place award for his sports feature essay of snowmobile racers at the annual World Powersports Association's World Snowmobile Tour stop at Grand Geneva Resort and Spa.
He won a second-place award in the portrait-personality category for a photograph of airplane pilot Steve Sorg, who refurbished a classic airplane. Mayer, in the seat in front of Sorg, held the camera over his head and backward for the shot, not knowing what he had until he returned to the ground.
His third award was an honorable mention in the pictorial category for a photograph of grazing horses below a cloud-filled sky.
