The Lakes Area Realtors; Association is sponsoring a Fair Housing Poster and Essay Contest. The 2007 theme is, Tune In To Fair Housing.
The nation's fair housing laws are intended to prohibit discrimination in the rental and sale of housing. Wisconsin's Fair Housing Law requires fair housing for all persons regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, ancestry, marital status, disability, lawful source of income or familial status. Although the law was passed over 25 years ago, discriminatory practices continue.
According to a Lakes Area Realtors' Association news release, the poster contest is open to children in grades K-12, including special education.
One poster representing the efforts of an entire group or class will also be accepted. The essay contest is open to children in grades 4-12. Entries should convey imagery or wording reflecting the theme.
Posters and essays are due Friday, April 13.
They will be judged by the LARA Equal Opportunity and Community Awareness Committee.
Winners in each category will receive two movie passes, a gift certificate to an area restaurant and framed photo of a Green Bay Packer sponsored by Landmark Title of Elkhorn.
The Lakes Area Realtors' Association will submit the winning entries for each grade level to the state for the statewide competition with the Wisconsin Realtors' Association and the Wisconsin Fair Housing Network.
Entries to the state contest will be grouped K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 for the state judging.
Winners of the State Fair Housing Contest receive framed certificates and other awards at a special ceremony held at the State Capitol on June 29.
Posters may be included in displays or publications to promote fair housing throughout the year.
Entries should not exceed a size that can be mailed without doing damage to the poster. Suggested materials include, but are not limited to, markers, colored pencils, crayons, paint, and construction paper.
Entries should be submitted to Mike VanderBunt, Association Executive of Lakes Area Realtors' Association, 5 South Ridgway Court, Suite 1C, Elkhorn, WI 53121.
