Equine health check-up workshop offered

Horse owners are encouraged to attend the Equine Health Check-Up Workshop scheduled for Saturday, March 24. This daylong program will offer a variety of health care and first aid information about horses, including hands-on small group sessions.

Topics that will be covered include a discussion with a veterinarian on "When to Call the Vet." During this session, participants will learn how to recognize symptoms that need to result in immediate health care as well as offer tips on what horse owners can do to help their horse until the vet arrives.

The remainder of the day will be divided into four small group discussions where participants will spend approximately one hour in each session learning a variety of preventative health care and first aid techniques for horses. These sessions will be taught by University of Wiscoinsin veterianary students and topics include wound care and leg wraps, feet and teeth, proper vaccination and worming and TPR (temperature, pulse and respiration) and skin care.

The workshop will be held at the UW-Madison Hoofer's Equestrian Center in Belleville, Wis. Early registration fees are $35/adults and $15 for youth, ages 18 and under. Early registration must be postmarked by March 14th. Late registration for adults is $45/person or $25 for youth, ages 18 and under. Lunch will be included with the registration fee.
