"Great Big Faces"

24th annual Armory Sale

(Published Jan. 16, 2007, 11:58 a.m.)

"Great Big Faces" performed by Paul Merklein will be drawing crowds, literally, at the 24th annual Armory Sale hosted by the Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce. This year's Armory Sale will take place on Saturday, Jan, 27 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m during Whitewater's Freeze Fest Weekend. The sale will be held at the Old Armory located at 146 W. North St. Whitewater merchants will be selling their overstocked and seasonal items at the lowest bargain prices possible at this indoor "street sale." Great deals will be offered all day.

"Great Big Faces" is a special presentation by performance artist Paul Merklein sponsored by the Whitewater Arts Alliance and the Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce. Merklein combines dynamic art and audience participation in his creation of 6-foot-tall faces of kids and adults using oil paints. "Kids usually get what I'm doing immediately because they are more receptive to new ideas and adults usually follow," said Merklein. "I call it creating art in action for everyone," he adds. The Great Big Faces performance will begin at 11 at the Armory. Merklein will also be on hand from noon - 2 p.m. to draw faces for individuals. "Great Big Faces" is sponsored in part by the Whitewater Arts Alliance to kick off their new "Be A Face In Whitewater" community project.

There will be additional workshops throughout the day including a Scrapbooking workshop by Creative Memories, home improvement opportunities by Strands on the Floor, Punch Needle and Locker Hooking Demos by Woodland Quilts. Special drawings will be held on the hour for door prizes from participating Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce businesses. Admission and parking for the Armory Sale are free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Participating merchants will include: Aropa, Bergey Jewelry, Between Friends Used Books, Dale's Bootery, Floral Villa/Pams Boutique, Leffingwells Menswear, Me and My Pets, Quiet Hut Sports, Quality Cellular, UW-Whitewater Bookstore, Culligan Dalee Water Treatment, Clinical Chiropractic of Whitewater, Woodland Quilts, Ziggy's Popcorn Wagon and more!

Hop on the sleigh or wagon sponsored by the Whitewater Tourism Council to take part in all of the Freeze Fest activities taking place at the Cravath Lakefront including ice-carving demonstrations, a quilt display, a rescue relay, chili contest, and fun for the whole family.

For more information about the Armory Sale, please call the Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce at (262) 473-4005. This event is free and open to the public and will take place regardless of the weather. Take a break from the winter doldrums and plan to stop by for a great day of bargains and fun! Come to Freeze Fest and warm up to Whitewater!
