The Badger boys basketball team knew they didn’t have the size to match up with Janesville Craig.
If they were going to win their WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal game in Fort Atkinson Friday night, they’d have to do it with hot shooting.
And sharp-shooting guard Jimmy Merritt saved his best for last, draining a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to defeat Craig 45-42.
In the other local Division 1 game, Elkhorn's season ended with a 52-48 loss at home to Verona.
The Badgers looked outmanned early, giving up a series of easy inside baskets to Craig.
But as Badger began to find their shooting touch, particularly from 3-point range, they began to climb back from an early deficit.
The score was tied at the end of 3 periods, and tied again with under a minute to play.
Badger controlled the ball, and the clock setting up Merritt’s last second heroics.
Badger moves on to face Verona in the sectional final at Elkhorn Area High School tomorrow at 7 p.m. A trip to next weekend’s state tournament is on the line.

In Division 2, East Troy moves on to the sectional final in Sun Prairie Saturday following a 53-39 win over Madison Edgewood at Janesville’s Parker High School.
East Troy, which finished the season as the No. 1 ranked Division 2 boys team, will face Monroe, 45-25 winners over Wisconsin Dells.
