Two Badger High students killed in crash

By Chris Schultz/Janesville Gazette

Two 17-year-old Badger High School students are dead following a car-dump truck collision at Highway 120 and County Road H in Walworth County early Thursday.

Brent Michael Konecny of 722 Wisconsin St., Lake Geneva, was declared dead at the scene about 8 a.m. Thursday morning, said Walworth County Deputy Coroner Ron Wilson.

The driver of the car, Monica Murphy, also 17, of Lake Como, was critically injured and taken to Lakeland Medical Center, Elkhorn. She was then transferred to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, Wauwatosa.

She died 2:21 a.m. Friday, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's office.

Konecny was a sophomore at Badger. Murphy was a junior.

Murphy was driving and Konecny was in the front passenger seat of a Pontiac Grand Prix, when the car made a left turn from northbound Highway 120 to westbound H directly into the path of dump truck owned by DLM Transportation of Lake Geneva.

Steve Cole, town of Bloomfield police chief, said the accident occured at 7:08 a.m., where 120 and H meet, creating a kind of "X" intersection just southeast of Big Foot Beach State Park. The intersection, which is controlled by traffic signals, is in the town of Bloomfield.

Cole said the car with Murphy and Konecny were northbound on 120 and turning on H to head northwest to Badger High School.

The dump truck was heading south on 120.

Cole said the two collided in the intersection about the time the traffic signal for 120 traffic had turned yellow.

The driver of the truck, Andrew J. Davis, 31, of Walworth, was not injured.

The two students were "just good solid kids. Good students," said Jim Gottinger, Badger High School District superintendent.

Gottinger said the school has a crisis plan in place and counselors will be available to talk to students about the tragedy.

Gottinger said the tragedy was still to recent for anyone at the school to comment further.

Cole said the Bloomfield police were assisted by the Lake Geneva police, the Walworth County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin State Highway Patrol. The highway patrol is investigating the accident.

No citations have been issued at this time, Cole said.

What a tragedy, just a day after Badger High had it's mock crash, the real thing happens. I'm not sure of all the particulars of this accident but what I am sure of, is this intersection is a dangerous one. The lights change very very fast and the curve there is very deceiving as to what traffic light you are viewing. I myself have almost gone through a red light thinking it was green on my side. Maybe it's time to look into this intersection before any more precious life's are lost!

Monica and Brent were amazing friends, children and students. This accident will affect all of us and they will forever be remembered. Our prayers are with them and the families.
As far as the accident itself. This is a horrible intersection. There have been numerous close calls because you really don't know what light to follow until you are right upon it. Then you either get lucky with a green light, or you have to slam on your brakes. Something must be done to prevent this from happening again.

Monica was not only my daughters best friend, but I had come to feel was my friend as well. She has always been welcome at our home. She has been a pleasant addition to our holiday events. My wife and daughter stayed with her until her heart stopped last night. This day has been alternately filled with mourning and disbelief that Monica has been taken from us. We are all better people for having known her. She will be deeply missed.

I am a girl for Hebron, IL and I go past the crash site almost everyday. Each day I see people by the remembrance site. It’s so sad to see students having to go see there friend at a grave. The only thing I know about those kids were that they were young and had there whole life ahead of them. I didnt know them personally. My heart goes out to the family of kids that died. I truly hope that they are able to cope with their loss. No parent should have to go visit there child at a grave. I'll keep you in my prayers. Sorry for your losses.

My name is Cheri... Monica was one of my best friends, it is so sad that this happened, I am still in complete shock over it... every time i see the dump truck that is the same as the one that killed her... I well up with anger and sorrow... I will never forgive the man who killed her, and I don't think I will ever fully recover from the grief i have felt since her death. Monica will never be forgotten.

I, too, think this is a misleading & confusing intersection. When travelling S on 120 & making a left (NW) turn onto H , several times I have ended up in the oncoming traffic, left turn lane. There are so many lanes & none say "do not enter". Clearly this new intersection needs some revamping. I'm sorry people must die before statics prove how dangerous an intersection is.

I'm the mother of Brent I feel that it is both Monica and the dump truck driver's fault why my son is dead. Brent di nothing wrong that day he is not blame for any of this. Monica and the dump truck driver should of been paying more closer attion to the lights. I also feel that the state needs do something about that intersection before some one losses a child

Excuse me Lynn.
First off let me say that I am sorry about the loss of your son.

I never knew Brent, but I did know Monica, in fact, she and I were best friends ever since childhood.

I tink it's unfair to point the blame at anyone.
And now, don't get me wrong, I agree that people do need to pay more attention while driving, but just pointing the finger isn't going to do anything.

This whole thing was a big tragic to all. I never knew Brent or Monica, but i know they were well loved. I think i've seen them a couple times, and its just sad to know how close they got to coming to school and didn't make it. Every day i pass there to the school, and i pray for the family's and the driver the whole time. Nobody should blame others for this, it was just a big accident.
